Climate litigation charity Plan B is to support three activists in their 20s in taking senior ministers to court over what they have said is the Government’s failure to honour its Paris Agreement commitments.

The three, Adetola Onamade, Marina Tricks and Jerry Amokwandoh have served legal proceedings on Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Kwasi Kwarteng.

They intend to argue that their futures depend upon implementation of the Paris Agreement, and so a failure to do this violates their rights to life and to family life under Articles 2 and 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Signs that the UK government has failed to implement the accord included, they said, grants of new oil and gas licences, the £27.4bn investment planned in the road network and the proposed opening of a new coal mine in Cumbria.

Plan B’s director Tim Crosland said: “There is no-one who takes seriously the Prime Minister’s preposterous and insulting claim to ‘climate leadership’.

He added that it was "not enough to cry over the fact that, at this critical moment for our children" the Government was presiding over the international climate negotiations at COP26.
