Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) has issued a prior information notice on pre-market engagement that will inform a decision on the shape of a prospective procurement for legal services to support the GDF (Geological Disposal Facility).

“This comprises support for the planning, major permissions, environment, land, regulatory and other public law elements to enable the drilling of deep geological boreholes to characterise sites to establish suitability as potential host rock for a GDF as well as provide strategic advice in relation to the same legal areas for the GDF itself,” NWS said.

The contract is estimated to be worth more than £29m.

The estimated date of publication of the contract notice is 2 September 2024.

The GDF, which will be the first of its kind in the UK, is expected to provide a permanent solution for the UK's higher-activity radioactive waste.
