Menter Môn, a not for profit company set up to provide solutions to the challenges facing rural Wales, is to procure legal counsel for a public inquiry in relation to a tidal energy project.

The organisation said it needed support through the public inquiry process in relation to a transport and works act application that had been submitted.

The legal services contract will be awarded on the basis of the delivery plan (weighting: 40%), risks and challenges (weighting: 25%), staff assigned to carry out the contract (weighting: 25%), local content (weighting: 10%) and price (weighting: 30).

Menter Môn said the Morlais Project aimed to attract tidal energy developers to Anglesey by securing planning consent, providing grid connections and developing the local supply chain.

Having secured the lease of the sea bed from the Crown Estate, Morlais has established a relationship with a number of companies and has sourced funding to support the industry.

Menter Môn said that over the next 10 years, it is hoped that up to 100MW of green energy will be produced and high quality jobs created for local people.

The £5.6m consent and development phase of the project has been supported by £4.2m from the European Regional Development Fund.
